The bustling area of Harpurhey is on the outskirts of the city of Manchester, just 3 miles north east of the city. Today it includes large estates like Kingsbridge and Shiredale, but back in the mid-1800s it had sufficient open grassland to hold its own race meeting. The three day meeting took place from Monday 6th to Wednesday 8th October 1845 and was thinly attended due to the inclement weather. The principal races on the first two days, the Wilton Stakes and Barnes Green Stakes, were both won by Mr Lamplugh’s Sheet Anchor, beating Ebberston on both occasions. The feature race on the concluding day was the Hurdle Stakes which went to Mr Griffith’s Lucy, while the Moston Lane Stakes was won by Bagatelle for Mr Moore. |
